Save the Azer children

The pen is mightier than the sword. At least that’s what Alison Jeffrey Azer’s supporters are hoping as they host a letter writing campaign to release four Canadian children from a Kurdish war zone.

Sharvahn, Rojevahn, Dersim and Meitan are the children of former St. Albert resident Alison Jeffrey. She moved to St. Albert at the age of five, the youngest of Anne and Jim Jeffrey’s four children.

Her former husband Saren Azer abducted the children on Aug. 15 during a European holiday and flew them to Northern Iraq, one of the most dangerous war zones in the Middle East.

At present Alison Jeffrey Azer is in Iraq attempting to secure the release of her four children. But here at home concerned residents can help as well.

A St. Albert letter writing campaign is underway for anyone interested in sending a message to Prime Minister Trudeau and Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion.

More than 1,500 letters have been sent, primarily initiated from Vancouver Island, the family’s home base.

“The crisis has gone far beyond a messy divorce. It is a criminal act resulting in the captivity of four Canadian children away not only from their mother who has not seen them in 112 days, but from personal safety and refuge. Please consider adding your voice. It will make a difference,” writes Krista Monson on her Facebook page.

Monson is also a former St. Albert resident, a close friend and one of Alison Jeffrey Azer’s main supporters throughout this traumatic incident.

“We urge each and all to include stopping by and signing letters ... It goes without saying that one of the greatest gifts we are contributing to is a strong, collective voice demanding our politicians secure the release of our four Canadian children who are currently in grave danger and see them home to the safety of their country of citizenship, Canada.”

The letter writing campaign takes place Saturday, Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Albert Farmers’ Market, 5 St. Anne Place. It continues Sunday, Dec. 13 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Albert United Church, 20 Green Grove Dr.
