The Saint City Rotary Club wants you to come play golf and then go to China with them. Thankfully, it's not all on the same day.
The club's ninth annual Charity Golf Classic is next Thursday at Sandpiper. It's their primary fundraiser and so they hope to fill the greens with as many swingers as possible, so to speak.
The action begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Aug. 17 but the breakfast and registration will start at 6:30 a.m.
During the event, they will be presenting cheques to three community groups including Appetite to Achieve, the St. Albert Public Schools' program to provide breakfast, snacks or lunches to more than 250 students each school day.
"We made a commitment to give $10,000 for the next couple of years. Last year, we helped feed over 800 students. It's amazing when you think about how many students in St. Albert are going to school hungry. That's quite remarkable," explained club member Linda Perras.
Saint City Rotary also supports the Canadian Association for Medical Teams Abroad (or CAMTA) and Clean Scene, a drug awareness program that offers support to students suffering from addiction or are at risk at Sir George Simpson School. CAMTA is set to make a trip to Ecuador next year to provide medical assistance to people who could not otherwise afford it.
The sum total of these gifts is nearly $20,000, a hefty amount for such a small but sturdy group of only 16 members to raise.
"We need the funds from the golf tournament to support it," she said.
Entry is $150 and includes breakfast and lunch, hot dogs on the course. There will be putting and chipping contests, prize draws and a live auction.
"It's a fun day just to get out and support great causes."
The deadline to sign up is Monday. Next April, the club is hosting an 11-day tour through China, including stops in Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, and Suzhou. There are two versions of the all-inclusive trip, each costing either $2,299 or $2,499. A portion of the costs will go to the club's fundraising pot.
Treat yourself to some ice cream; treat others to a miracle
Aug. 10 is Dairy Queen's Miracle Treat Day, the annual fundraising event for the Children's Miracle Network. For every Blizzard sold, $1 goes towards benefitting local community children's hospitals. Here in St. Albert and Morinville, that means the Stollery Children's Hospital.
The three locations can be found at 8807 100 St. in Morinville, and at both 388 and 935 St. Albert Trail in this city.
MFRC fundraiser a hit
The Yellow Ribbon Day event at the St. Albert Farmers' Market last Saturday sold a lot of decorations to shoppers and supporters. The St. Albert Chamber of Commerce, operators of the market, is set to hand over $300 to the Edmonton Garrison's Military Family Resource Centre.
