Classic car enthusiasts are singing God’s praises for a car show coming back to the city this weekend. You can almost hear the rumbling of the engines as the REVREV Rods and Relics Revival is setting up to take place at the King of Kings Lutheran Church on Saturday.

This is the fifth year for the event in a city that clearly has a thing for classic cars, muscle cars and hot rods of all stripes.

Jan Pastucha is the pastor at the church and the driving force behind the event. He said that whether or not you go for this sort of thing, it still has a noble cause behind it, the origins of which occurred several years ago when he was still stationed in Winnipeg. There was a traumatic accident in his family that inspired the whole thing.

“My brother suffered a third degree burn to his drawing hand. He’s an artist. I actually went down, helping him out through some of the recovery process while he was still in the hospital,” Pastucha said.

“Every now and then he’d go into the children’s burn unit and do some mentoring over there with the children. At the time, I had just put my hot rod together and thought I’d love to do a car show that gives something back to the community.”

All the vehicle registrations and any T-shirt or auction sales proceeds will go to the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation to help the critical care unit.

The online auction can be found on the group’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/groups/23714139541/?fref=ts.

The car show will include numerous different categories for judging, including People’s Choice, Best Hot Wheels, Best Bike in Show, Best in Paint, and the Hooligan Award.

“There’s been some people ask about doing a bike burnout. So we’ve got a couple of guys bringing the bikes as well.”

In conjunction with the event, organizers are bringing back the Classic ’40s and ’50s Pin Up Pageant. The pageant takes place on Saturday, but the public can vote to determine the winner up until Friday at midnight. Voting is online at hooliganreview.blogspot.ca. There are different categories for judging here as well, including Best Talent, the Hot Legs Award and Miss Hot Rod Hooligan, plus two runners-up.

Attendees can also take in a go-kart competition, taking place as soon as the gates open at noon. Entertainment will be provided by the Sabre Jets at 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.

“They’re really cool. They do this mod surf music,” Pastucha explained.

Trophies will be handed out at 4:30 p.m.

There will be vendors on the scene as well.
