The Relay for Life last weekend saw an outstanding group of people take to the rings at the Fowler Track to take in a noon to midnight jaunt. The Relay for Life last weekend saw an outstanding group of people take to the rings at the Fowler Track to take in a noon to midnight jaunt. In fact, the size of the event was unprecedented for the new schedule.
“This was our biggest relay ever, in terms of participants and fundraising,” stated an enthusiastic co-ordinator Treena Mohrbutter.
She noted that there were 18 teams with more than 150 members who collectively raised in excess of $60,000. Her goal was to reach $51,500 and bring together enough people to beat last year's contingent of 10 teams that barely topped 100 walkers.
Previously, the relay was held from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to make sure that the walkers saw both the evening and the morning suns, all in keeping with its theme that ‘Cancer never sleeps' so they wouldn't either. The timing was changed to keep it more open to families

Scouts' garage sale nearing end
There are only two weekends left until the 12th St. Albert Scouts annual garage sale comes to a close, and organizers are still hoping to attract more thrifty shoppers. There are several sea cans worth of goods onsite with some great deals to be had under the 3,200-square-foot tent.
“There are four more sea cans open here this weekend,” said organizer Steve Sande. “We just need clients now. We need the masses.”
The goal is to raise enough money to send 17 Scouts to the upcoming Jamboree in Japan, at a cost of $4,000 to $5,000 each. At last count, only $16,500 had been raised, well below expectations. The plan was to have $10,000 more than that by this point in the sale.
“We still have a ton of stock!”
Donations of quality secondhand items – including sports equipment, household goods, furniture, books, clothes, tools, and toys – can still be dropped off at the sale site. Pickups can also be scheduled by calling 780-616-8528 or via email at [email protected].
The garage sale is set to run this weekend and next, ending on June 28. It is open from 5 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The sale is located at the King of Kings Lutheran Church, 54211 Range Road 253 on St. Albert Trail.
The World Jamboree in Japan runs from July 28 to Aug. 8.
