If you're driving past Fowler Athletic Park on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue later this evening, please remember that your eyes aren't deceiving you. There really are dozens upon dozens of people walking on the track much later than you would usually see them exercising.
It's because they are walking in remembrance. They say cancer never sleeps so why should they? The Relay for Life walk takes place today from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m. The annual charity event for the Canadian Cancer Society has changed its schedule once again, after originally going from an overnighter 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. to a much gentler noon to midnight stretcher.
Attendees are also encouraged to bring their yoga mats as local dance choreographer and yoga teacher Shrina Patel will be leading a class at 5 p.m. Collette Gasper, founder of Feel the Momentum Fitness, will be leading the pre-Relay ZUMBA warm-up at 1:40 p.m. There will also be a live painting performance during the relay, among other special events. A luminary ceremony sees candles being lit around the track to help light the way as the sun slowly sets during one of the shortest nights on the calendar.
The annual fundraising walk brings teams of cancer survivors and their supporters together in a show of solidarity. As of Thursday, the participants had raised more than 50 per cent of their fundraising goal of $28,142. People can find out more by visiting www.relayforlife.ca.
Shooting for the Stollery
Everybody wants to help the Stollery and the Edmonton Gun Club is no exception. It's rallying the troops for its seventh annual Shoot for the Stollery event, a day of target practice and humanitarian work all rolled into one.
"The outstanding and important work of the Stollery, and the service it provides to children and families across Western Canada, is well known. Several members of the Edmonton Gun Club have spent many hours at the Stollery Children's Hospital while their children have undergone successful treatment," said club president Jack Broadfoot.
Last year, the club raised $17,000 for the Stollery with the sharpshooting assistance of 105 participants. This year's event is on Sat., Aug. 26.
Registration is $150. For more information, visit www.edmontongunclub.com.
