Women across Canada and the globe are seeking equality and hope to achieve that goal in less time than the 100 years that some are predicting.
In 2016, International Women’s Day happening on March 8 believes it is time to accelerate gender parity.
The theme is Pledge for Parity. It was developed after the 2015 World Economic Forum released a study the stated gender parity has slowed to a glacial pace and estimates it won’t close entirely until 2133.
That’s more than a century from now.
As Canada prepares to mark the celebration, the St. Albert Baha’i are gearing up for their 20th International Women’s Day award ceremony on March 5.
It is a showcase affair that reinforces women’s empowerment, dignity and equality, and spotlights five local women whose unswerving dedication to a cause or a project has brought about positive change.
They have put out a call for nominations for special women who inspire the rest of us and create the foundations of strong community, said Baha’i committee spokesperson Elaine Tahririha.
“The common thread among most recipients is passion and humbleness. It’s the passion that drives them whether it’s passion for disabled children or creating a business or just making a difference. And I am always touched by their humbleness,” said Tahririha.
The organizing committee is searching for remarkable women based in St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County. Suggested categories to enter achievements are science, arts, business, community service, aboriginal initiatives, health, literacy, mentorship, peace and youth.
The award recipients chosen for 2015 were environmental steward Louise Horstman, domestic violence educator Laura Hennie, community supporter Suzan Krecsy, education and youth mentor Lisa Holmes, and global humanitarian Sophia Qaderi.
“The award ceremony is an opportunity to honour women and see their contributions. It also gives us an opportunity to be grateful and bring attention to the progress that has been made and share a light on what needs to happen.”
The deadline for nominations is Feb. 6. A nomination form is available online at www.stalbertbahai.org or by calling 780-459-4060.
