St. Albert’s autumn arts festival is returning for its second year with a new name and logo that will brand the event.

The StArts Festival, formerly known as St. Albert Celebrates the Arts Festival, is as committee co-chair Peter Moloney describes a “word smash, ” a shortened moniker that captures the richness of the local artistic community.

The newly branded St. Albert Cultivates the Arts committee is petitioning all local artists and designers who work, live or go to school in St. Albert to submit their ideas for a logo competition.

There is no age limit and the same person can enter multiple submissions whether they are professionals or students. “We talked about setting boundaries. In the end we decided to leave it to community artists’ imaginations and see what we get. But ideally it should reflect the arts community,” says Moloney.

“Our festival tries to represent as wide a variety of artists, from the visual to the theatrical to the literary to the performing arts. This year, we’re adding a new element — media arts. We would like to see the logo reflect that.”

Also worth considering is the committee not only has a short-term goal of staging a festival to celebrate the arts. Its long-range plan is to be recognized as a society that would be eligible for government grants to stage a variety of events.

In fact, it is planning to host some events surrounding the Lieutenant Governor’s Distinguished Arts Award Gala, coming to St. Albert April 9, 2011.

“We are very excited to see what comes from the community. The professionals thought we should go the normal brand route, but because the festival is for the community, we decided to go to the community. We’re very excited and hopeful to see what comes in.”

The logo contest closes Friday, April 23 at 5 p.m. and the winning design will be announced Monday, May 3. For full details go to www.startsfest.ca. For additional information call 780-643-7540.
