St. Albert dancer Paige Tirs just received a second place win in the Servus Credit Union Young & Free Dance Challenge. She was one of 41 entries entered in an online dance competition targeted to the 17 to 25 dance crowd.
“I was pretty shocked I got second. It is hard to get votes when you’re a single dancer and you’re up against big groups that have a large fan base,” says Tirs who takes home a $500 cash prize.
The short two-minute tap choreography was danced to Jason Mraz’s I’m Yours and shot last summer in her back yard and at St. Albert’s train trestle bridge.
“I was trying to build a demo reel to send to agents. It was very handy when the competition came along,” adds Tirs, who teaches at Shelley Dance Company and the Riverbend Dance Academy.
Tirs performs next in Prelude to a Kiss featuring Breaking Barres at The Haven Social Club on Saturday, March 12.

The Songwriters Acoustic Showcase at LB’s is picking up steam and tomorrow night, country singer Kory Wlos shares his passion for music.
Wlos grew up on a small farm near Boyle with a dream of playing hockey. But guitar lessons changed the course of his life and many of his songs reflect farm and family roots.
“Kory’s got a new flavour to classic country but [it’s] very down home. He grew up in the Athabasca area and his songs are more like Duane Steele than Gord Bamford,” says showcase co-host Kenny Skoreyko.
Skoreyko first played drums for Wlos about eight years ago and noticed his professionalism. “When he gets on stage, his focus on entertaining is intense. He always wants to put the best product on stage.”
Charlie Deschan, the Guitar Doctor, will be featured as part of the in-house band temporarily replacing Gord Matthews. “Charlie is magical. For years he was Danny Hooper’s guitarist. He’s top-notch.”
The showcase starts at 8:30 p.m. LB’s is at 23 Akins Dr. No cover.
