They talk. They rock. And there have been, at times, Tupelo Honey shocks.

One of St. Albert’s favourite fivesomes is taking time out of their energy packed calendar for a couple of concerts this weekend at Lyve on Whyte.

With an 11 p.m. start, tonight’s full-throttle rock concert also features opening acts JFR Project, Vinyl Heat and Chasing Jones. Tomorrow night, Tupelo Honey switches gears to a more low-key acoustic show starting at 9 p.m. with warm-up acts Jay Sparrow, Maurice and Looking East.

“We wanted to make it different — something to grab people’s attention. When we play two nights we don’t want people seeing the same set, and it’s kind of fun to interpret the show in a different way,” explains lead singer Dan Davidson.

The fivesome — which also includes Tyler Dianocky (guitar), Steve Vincent (bass), Greg Williamson (drums) and newest member Brad Simons (guitar) — have been steadfastly been working on a new album rumoured to be released in early November. “We never did set a date,” Davidson continues, adding the band will be playing songs from the upcoming release.

While a heavy rock show is a staple of their success, the acoustic set brings out a mellower side of the band. “We’ve taken the aggressive upbeats and made them more vulnerable and given it a more heartfelt vibe. Just putting a song in a different key gives it a more subdued way.”

The cover is $20. Lyve on Whyte is at 8111 – 105 St. For more information call 780-437-7181.

Former St. Albert country singer Marlee Scott just sent in a teaser from Nashville where she now makes her home. Scott, who was nominated for a 2010 Canadian Country Music Rising Star Award, just released a new single, Here to Heaven, to country radio in Canada, Europe and Australia.

And just before the CCMA awards in September, Scott flew off to Vancouver with award-winning director Stephano Barberis from Arkadia Pictures to shoot the same-song video. “I’m so pumped for people to hear this song,” explains Scott. For current information, visit www.marleescott.com.

This coming week Mark Ammar’s Tuesday Open Stage brings together a special fusion of veteran blues road warriors and young emerging artists. Host Ammar spotted Lyra Brown, a young voice around the Edmonton area, for the first time at a concert in Fort Saskatchewan. She was opening for folk singer Joe Nolan, a frequent busker at St. Albert Farmers’ Market.

“I couldn’t wait to meet her and bring her to St. Albert for a feature night,” says Ammar. The U22 artist has a glowing reputation that has been influenced by Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco and Nelly Furtado to name a few.

Joining her is Paul Finn, a veteran blues player with a knack for playing off the cuff. And bass player Randy Forsberg a.k.a. Big Daddy Forsberg of The Vindicators will be pairing up with him.

LB’s is at 23 Akins Dr. Jams start at 9 p.m. No cover.
