It's a game a lot of teenage girls play — pretending to be older and more sophisticated so they can sneak into clubs, today's popular meat markets where pseudo sophistication and casual sex flow as abundantly as the drinks.
Northern Light Theatre's artistic director Trevor Schmidt opens the season with Deirdre O'Connor's gutsy play, Jailbait, that opened Friday and runs until Sept. 26.
The main theme is sex and it kicks off with teenagers Emmy and Claire primping for a date with two older men at a Boston nightclub. They're conning the men into believing they're college students. But before the evening is up, they're going to find out that lies can destroy the liar and being a “pick-up” can be a bummer.
Jailbait stars Randy Borosky, Melanie Piatocha, Carmela Sison and Mike Zimmerman.
The production runs at the Varscona Theatre, 10329 – 83 Ave. Tickets cost between $18 and $24. Call 780-471-1586 or purchase online at www.northernlighttheatre.com.

The Singing Christmas Tree is an Edmonton institution that has been televised across the nation. This coming December it will celebrate its 41st year of musical cheer through the theme I'll Be Home for Christmas.
Executive producer John Cameron and music director Trent Worthington need about 300 heart-felt singers to bring this 35-foot human tree to life.
Auditions will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. at Edmonton City Centre, Lower Level Food Court, where a panel of judges will select candidates.
“We're encouraging soloists to come out as well as duos, trios and groups. We want as many people as possible involved in the choir,” says media representative Crysta Hudyma.
Singers should sing their own material either in an a cappella format or with background music provided by a CD or iPod.
The Singing Christmas Tree concert is scheduled for Dec. 17 to 19 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
Edmonton City Centre is at 10025 – 102 Ave.
The 2010 Fall/Winter collections are out in full force at Western Canada Fashion Week and St. Albert designer Lisa-Marie Sciroli is lining up her garments for the catwalk.
Sciroli's line titled BOLD, hits the runway at Westbury Theatre at the TransAlta Arts Barns this coming Wednesday, expanding on her signature grace and elegance.
Inspired by Audrey Hepburn's 1950s' look, Sciroli creates fitted skirts with form fitted covered necklines to plunging lower backlines.
“This season is different from others in that I am focusing on business wear to classic dresses you can layer throughout the seasons giving you new looks,” Sciroli says.
She adds that in this “anything goes” fashion climate, layering a cute dress with funky tights, high boots, a wool jacket with huge pockets and a hood is all that's needed to look stylish.
The TransAlta Arts Barns is located at 10330 – 84 Ave. Shows are at 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $18 and $20 at the door. Call 780-420-1757 or visit www.tixonthesquare.ca
