What better way to relive the magic of Christmas than with two of the most anticipated Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) concerts of the Robbins Pops Series.

In A Very Merry Pops, on Dec. 18 and 19 at 8 p.m. at the Winspear Centre, Steven Reineke, music director of the New York Pops, returns as guest conductor. A familiar face, he leads the orchestra in a collection of winter songs, carols, light classics and a sing-along.

Special guests include the Greenwood Singers, Cantilon Chamber Choir and recurring ESO guest soloist, former Sturgeon County resident Tyler Hamilton.

The hot-looking baritone first hit the national spotlight as a Canadian Idol competitor. Although, he didn’t win, Hamilton completed several seasons with the Design U television series. In addition, his powerful vocals and dashing good looks were instrumental in landing a slot at the David Foster and Friends Charity Gala.

Now currently working on a project in Los Angeles, Hamilton continues to perform with the ESO on a regular basis.

On Saturday only, the Cantilon Chamber Choir joins the ESO for A Family Christmas Concert at 2 p.m. It is an afternoon of well-loved carols plus a presentation of The Snowman, an animation about a young boy who creates a snowman that magically comes to life.

Tickets for A Very Merry Pops range from $20 to $69 and A Family Christmas Concert tickets are $15 to $30. Call 780-428-1414 or online at www.edmontonsymphony.com.

Once again, Bermuda-born sisters Kay and Kathy DaSilva, also known as 2islandgirls, aim to raise the temperature tomorrow night at The Ivory Club and Ebony Grille.

The Ivory Club concert celebrates songs from their self-titled debut CD along with some new tunes and recently written Christmas tracks. Settle in for a fusion of Caribbean and Latin styles, blended with soulful ballads and jazz infused piano licks.

Kay (lead vocals) and Kathy (12-string guitar) are joined by the area’s most prominent musicians including St. Albert resident Gord Matthews (guitar), a former k.d. lang crony; Chris Andrew, a keyboard Juno Award nominee; Don Marcotte (bass guitar) and Duane Hyrnkiw (percussion).

The Ivory Club is at 10304 – 111 St. Tickets are $10 and are available at 780-420-1757 or online at [email protected].

Once more Teatro La Quindicina returns to the Varscona stage with its annual Christmas classic.

The company remounts a live radio version of the classic Frank Capra/Jimmy Stewart motion picture It’s a Wonderful Life this coming Friday and Saturday.

This tale of despair and redemption is performed as a 1940’s radio broadcast with actors dressed in period costume. Jeff Haslam and Davina Stewart reprise their roles as George and Mary Bailey. Also starring in this production are Leona Brausen, Kendra Conner, Cathy Derkach, Andrew MacDonald Smith, and Mark Meer.

Friday performances are at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday shows are at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. All seats are $25 or $20 for students/seniors. Call 780-433-3399. The Varscona is located at 10329 – 83 Ave.
