St. Albert rockers Tupelo Honey are the big winners of the Edmonton Journal’s puck rock contest, a competition designed to produce the best hockey anthem.

The Edmonton daily reported that Tupelo’s pump-up song Can’t Stop was the overwhelming favourite with 1,038 votes or about 57.5 per cent of the popular vote.

“We thought we had a pretty good shot. But we were up against such good bands as Flash Jam and Mikey Maybe and Mitchmatic. We were honoured to be grouped with them and, had we lost, we would have been gracious in defeat,” says Tupelo drummer Greg Williamson.

The fivesome receive $500. However, the big prize is the possibility of having Can’t Stop played at one of the Edmonton Oilers’ games.

“Now there’s the job of convincing the Oilers to play it,” says Williamson who grew up around the Oilers. His grandfather, Harold Deeks, was vice-president of the western division of Molson. As a youngster Williamson was a frequent guest in the Molson’s box. He later played rep hockey in the United States.

“I didn’t make it as a hockey player, but this is my chance to give something back.”

Williamson added Can’t Stop should be available on YouTube next week. Check www.tupelohoney.ca for updates.
