A Sturgeon County resident is among 10 finalists in Song For Canada, a competition from Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Sandra Brenneis, the well-known composer of the musical Mary’s Veil, is among 631 Canadians from coast to coast that wrote poems reflecting the essence of Canada and what it means to be Canadian. Hopefuls were also encouraged to enter a musical interpretation of their poem.

Winners will be announced Tuesday, Aug. 30. The first-place winner will have a minimum of one line from their submission included in an original score that will debut in October on the broadcast of the Canada’s Walk of Fame induction ceremonies on Global and Slice.

Canadian songwriter Stephan Moccio, who penned the 2010 Vancouver Olympics theme song I Believe, has been tapped to compose the score.

Up until this Friday the public can help select the contest winners by checking out the top 10 entries at www.canadaswalkoffame.com and voting for their choice.

The final judges are Peter Soumalias, founding director of Canada’s Walk of Fame; jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky; two-time Juno winner Chantal Kreviazuk; Our Lady Peace lead singer Raine Maida; ET Canada co-host Rick Campanelli; and Moccio.

The first-place winner receives $25,000, a trip for two to the award ceremony, and a chance to work with Moccio, Maida and Kreviazuk, in addition to acquiring a recording package at Metalworks Studios valued at $10,000.

Edmonton’s much-anticipated annual Labatt Blues Festival plans to kick up a storm at Hawrelak Park’s Heritage Amphitheatre from Aug. 19 to 21.

Headlining are The John Nemeth Soul Revue, Grammy Award-winning Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band, and the exciting Guitar Shorty.
