Producer/writer/director Ron E. Scott has a lot to smile about these days.

Blackstone, Prairie Dog’s television creation whittled away the competition at the Rosie Awards, taking home three trophies. They included Best Screenwriter in a Drama for the former St. Albert resident.

Blackstone, shot in Namao, also won a Rosie as the Best Production Reflecting Cultural Diversity, and Roseanne Supernault received a nod for her role as Natalie Stoney, a young girl living in a dysfunctional family.

Hosted by Alberta Media Production Industries Association, the event was held last Saturday at the Marriott at River Cree Resort in Edmonton.

Blackstone is Canada's only series dealing with the power of politics and corruption on a fictional First Nations reservation. Its first season aired on APTN under the watchful eye of media across the continent.

An eight-episode second season is now in development. For more information visit www.blackstonetheseries.com.

Two St. Albert dancers, Danica Smith and Lauren O'Kell star in Citie Ballet's newest production running on Saturday, June 4 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Artistic director Francois Chevennement was inspired by a real-life unsolved death at Edmonton's Strand Theatre back in the 1920s.

Set in the vaudeville era, Charlie the doorman of the Strand shepherds the dancers. They include Smith's character, Astor, a diva past her prime, and O'Kell's character, the young, up-and-coming Marie. Jealousy arises and there's a tug between the two.

Thrown into the mix is Treffery, a newcomer who wants to film the dancers. Before you know it, he's dead.

Part of the backdrop is a 1940s-style film shot at Fort Edmonton Park. “It really gives it a lot of depth. It's a story of the dancers' lives and it makes the characters come alive a bit more,” Smith says.

“The music and the costume are fantastic. The set is beautiful and the dancing is wonderful. This is a very strong company and it's exciting to see where it's headed.”

Tickets are $15 to $24. Call 780-420-1757 or purchase online at www.tixonthesquare.ca.
