Some fairytale characters learn that the happily-ever-after magic bullet isn’t there for everyone.

ELOPE Theatre is tackling Stephen Sondheim’s chaotic Into the Woods from April 27 to 30 at the Timms Centre.

Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this Tony-award-winning musical gives those memorable childhood stories a fresh twist.

The venture mixes the characters of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk along with the woeful tale of a baker and his wife who desperately want a child. Unfortunately, she has been cursed by a witch and must perform several acts with the others to break the spell.

A talented cast of 19 face off with hungry wolves, giants falling from the sky and a giantess looking for revenge.

The four-day extravaganza is held at the Timms Centre for the Arts, located at 87 Ave. and 112 St. Tickets are $30 for adults and $25 for students. Call 780-420-1757 or visit www.tixonthesquare.ca.

Mark Ammar’s Tuesday Moosehead Open Stage at LB’s Pub salutes a friendship of old. Blues and roots musician Darrell Kittlitz passed away on April 24, 2010 and for many on the local music scene, it was a great loss.

In memory of his friend, host Mark Ammar has invited Kittlitz’s sons Ryan and Jeff for an evening of nostalgia on Tuesday, April 26.

Jeff has played music for more than 20 years and has filled his time performing, touring, teaching and producing. “He has played in This Is War, Own the Rockhouse and Artist Development and does lots of charity work with Catholic Social Services for youth who don’t have available music,” says Ammar.

And Ryan, the youngest son, is a rock-out drummer that once performed with the now defunct Compromise and the Vancouver-based Savannah.

Also on tap is the jam’s former co-host Noel ‘Big Cat’ Mackenzie, once a frequent player with Kittlitz.

The jam starts at 9 p.m. LB’s is at 23 Akins Drive. There is no cover charge.
