Ever wondered what it would be like to step on a stage and let your inner rock star explode into a full-throttle musical adventure?
Can you envision the excitement, the adrenalin rush of playing those first notes into booming amplifiers that can be heard several blocks away?
All of that can happen when the City of St. Albert hosts a Battle of the Bands on July 1. At this moment organizers are putting out a call for budding talent to sign up.
“The field is open. Any band can register – rock and roll, punk, jazz, classical, rap, metal, country, R&B or alternative,” says point-man Micah Seon-King, community recreation coordinator.
Seon-King inherited the band competition after the 150th anniversary’s highly successful Battle of the Bands sparked interest among local singer/songwriters.
“We had a huge response from youth and they thought it was a great idea. This year we’re starting early getting the word out.”
The city partnered with Innovations Music and reached out to several North American communities to learn about and create a worthy competition model.
“Bands need to submit a CD or YouTube video of three songs they will perform during the competition. With the YouTube video we can share a link on our Facebook page. By downloading and putting YouTube videos on there, people can promote themselves and get a fan base,” adds Seon-King.
There are three restrictions: at least 50 per cent of the band must reside in St. Albert, all members must be 21 or younger and a minimum of half of the band members must be under 18, and two or more band members must play an instrument throughout the majority of the performance.
Organizers are discouraging bands using alcohol or drugs.
“We ask that no songs offend anyone and we ask that no indecent or obscene gestures or lyrics be used. This is a family event and it can result in a disqualification.”
Registration deadline is Monday, May 21. In addition to a demo, bands must submit an application form and a $20 non-refundable deposit.
Registration forms are available online at www.stalbert.ca/battle-of-the-bands or through Innovations Music and the City of St. Albert Community and Protective Services, 5 St. Anne Street.
Judges will select six finalists from the entries and they will be notified by June 18.
“This is going to be a great event that gives musicians an opportunity to show their strengths and talents. I know a ton of talent is out there. They need to persevere and showcase their work and be part of the community. The Battle of the Bands gives them a chance to shine.”
