Knight of Yoga

It will be akin to an invasion of sun salutations to kick off the fall. The first annual Knight of Yoga in September will be a three-hour yoga-thon, a St. Albert fundraiser in support of Knight's Cabin Cancer Retreats. “Edmonton is my hometown,” said the retreat's founder Lisa Belanger, “so it was an obvious choice of location for this epic event. It also is the perfect place to find Knight of Yoga participants and inspiring yoga teachers.”

Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts of all skill levels are anticipated to sweat and stretch their way through the event.

The Hatha yoga class will be instructed by local teacher Gillian Kennedy, founder of Om on the Range Workplace Yoga.

“It's all about raising awareness and funds so Knight's Cabin can help even more cancer survivors in their recovery,” explains Belanger. “We just hope everyone in Edmonton comes out to cheer on the Knight of Yoga participants and helps this worthy cause by making an online donation.”

Knight's Cabin is a non-profit charity whose mission is to empower cancer survivors and supporters to take action and make positive health behaviour changes that improve their lives. Established only last year, the organization has hosted five retreats in both Alberta and Nova Scotia.

The retreats offer a place for survivors to relax and find new focus on positive health behaviours including physical activity, nutrition, and sleep as ways of helping to prevent a recurrence of their cancers or other diseases.

Knight's Cabin retreats are held at no cost to survivors and their supporters, which is why the yoga event is so important.

In addition to yoga, afternoon festivities during the Knight of Yoga include door prizes, entertainment and refreshments.

Knight of Yoga will take place on Sept. 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. Athlete's Nation is located at 125 Carleton Dr. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring their own yoga mat, towel and water bottle.

Registration is free and all participants are required to raise a minimum of $160. Knight's Cabin is a registered nonprofit organization and tax receipts will be issued for any pledges of $20 or more.

Local club adopts Valour Place

The St. Albert-Sturgeon Valour Volleyball Club put its money where its name is last week by presenting a cheque for $5,000 to Valour Place.

After the club amalgamated from two separate volleyball clubs, they adopted the name Valour when they surveyed their members for ideas. The executives wanted something that would have more significance to the community at large and thoughts immediately went to the large number of residents in both this city and Sturgeon County that serve with the military or RCMP.

Edmonton's Valour Place offers temporary residential space to soldiers, veterans and RCMP members and their families as they undergo medical treatment and care.

The team simply wanted its athletes to be proud to give back to the community. They unanimously decided that the volleyball association would donate its annual fundraising money to the same cause as a way of honouring the military and RCMP members.
