Macarons & Goodies introduces a new tradition

Once again St. Albert’s Macarons & Goodies is working their gastronomic magic, and this time it’s putting on a royal-inspired afternoon tea.

Following the successful launch of the French-style pastry shop, owner Fadoua Derbel is creating an entirely immersive British-style afternoon tea.

The mouth-watering menu blooms with savoury bites and a broad selection of sweets elegantly served on a three-tier stand.

“I wanted to make something exclusive. I have a lot of clients tell me they’ve gone to Fairmont Hotel for tea. I had the idea since I came to Edmonton. I love the idea of high tea, especially in winter. It is warm and intimate,” said Derbel, an international pastry chef.

She captures the essence of traditional teas but adds a modern twist. The savoury bites range from mini quiche Lorraine and cucumber sandwiches to mini mille feuille salmon and mini brie strawberry croissant.

Sweets include mini-strawberry cheesecake, mini key lime tart, macarons, cupcake elderflower, panna cotta mango, mini scones and homemade jam and cream.

The delectable afternoon tea will be served alongside a pantry of 15 types of loose-leaf tea.

“Come try our high tea. I know people will love it, especially in the afternoons.”

Macarons & Goodies hosts high tea every second Wednesday of the month at 50 St. Thomas Street. The first two teas are slated for Nov. 13 and Dec. 11 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $38 per person. To reserve call 587-290-0550 or email

Book release

On a side note, Duchess Bake Shop released a new cookbook to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

Duchess co-founder Giselle Courteau penned a second cookbook, Duchess At Home, and it hit store shelves in late Oct.

In the 272-page hardcover, Courteau, a self-taught baker, shares intimate stories and recipes from her French-Canadian heritage.

She takes readers into her personal world away from the bakeshop where memories of her Franco-Albertan childhood, Christmas food traditions and bountiful Sunday meals are shared.

The cookbook is priced at $35 and is available at the bakeshop or at Indigo bookstores.
