Hailey Benedict is one of the most-awarded young performers in Albert’s country music history. And she continues to impress. At the 14th annual Country Music Alberta Awards on March 2 at Calgary’s Grey Eagle Casino, she took home another trophy.
The St. Albert singer-songwriter, who currently spends half her time in Nashville, capped a fast-rising career-winning Single of the Year for Things My Mama Says.
Written by Benedict alongside Clara Park and Ava Suppelsa, the song is a deeply personal reflection on the emotional tension between trusting a mother’s advice and worrying about her from a distance.
At the time, Benedict’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and the singer-songwriter debated about putting her career on pause.
“My mom has always been one of my biggest supporters, and despite her diagnosis, she urged me to keep pursuing my dreams. Most of the time she’s right, but this time I wasn’t so sure. Things My Mama Says illustrates the irony of how our mothers spend their lives worrying about us, and then one day, the roles are reversed,” stated Benedict through an email.
Things My Mama Says marks Benedict's debut single since signing with Big Loud Records and its Dallas Smith-founded Local Hay Records.
Her next St. Albert performance takes place April 4 at the Arden Theatre as part of CFCW's Heartstrings &B Honkytonks. She will perform with St. Albert's Dan Davidson, Clayton Bellamy, Duane Steel and Delta Street.
The country concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $52. Go online at tickets.stalbert.ca or call 780-459-1542.
