Grandin Theatre’s transformation into Grandin’s empty lot doesn’t sit well with some St. Albert residents.
“It’s a shame about the theatre closing,” said Meghan Tauber. “If (my daughter and I) want to have a night out together it can cost $100, maybe more. We used to be able to see a show for $25, total.”
Tauber was disappointed of the lack of activities available for children in St. Albert and said she wished the theatre could have stayed. It was a way for her and her daughter to spend some time together out of the heat.
Grandin Theatres was the last place in the city to catch a movie after St. Albert Cinema closed down.
The abrupt end to the local entertainment spot caught many in the city by surprise. General manager Amy Woloszyn told reporters on May 7 that the theatre would not close. Its doors were shut by the end of the month.
Fond memories of the closed theatre did not extend to Grandin mall, which is also being demolished.
“It’s an eyesore,” said Lisa Furry. “They should take that tower down with it. In my opinion it’s an eyesore, too. The mall was very rundown and few people used it.”
Furry is referring to the existing office tower, which will not be demolished according to development manager Simon Taylor. She could not remember a time when the mall was ever popular.
“Redeveloping the land is good for the community,” said Tasha Matte. “I don’t remember the last time I went there.”
With the exception of receiving flu vaccinations or shopping at the SHAVA bookstore, most residents interviewed couldn’t remember the last time they stepped foot in the mall.
“I’ll miss the theatre,” said Abigail Cayanga. “But I never used the mall. I hope they are able to relocate.”
Unfortunately, the theatre relocating seems less and less likely as time goes on.
Activities such as the library’s Reel Mondays and the film fundraisers held for local schools are now memories.
The curtain closed on Grandin Theatres at the end of May and for the time being, residents will have to make the trek to Edmonton to see a flick. For years the theatre entertained all ages and for that it will be missed.
