VASA artist Teresa Graham knows the value of double booking: it also means that you get double billing.
During the same week where she is setting up a new exhibit at the Jeff Allen Gallery in Edmonton, she also found herself hanging a series of new works in the Bookstore on Perron’s Gallery 7. Apparently, it wasn’t intentional.
“I made a mistake and booked two shows at the same time!” she admitted, with a laugh.
Petals and Places is the title of her St. Albert show. It features watercolour paintings of places and things that are close to her heart including a farm in Smoky Lake. She also has a fondness for some feathered friends including some crows that she has encountered throughout her life.
“My newest crow picture is representing my dad actually on a grave. I feel my dad watches over us. I know I sound kooky but I’ve had those experiences with the crows!” she beamed. “Every time I visit my dad at the cemetery, there is a crow that just perches up above me almost every time.”
“I just believe they’re so smart. I’ve done a lot of reading on them. And not only crows but corvids. I feed the blue jays every morning. One of them – he’s got a crooked beak so he must have hit a window – he comes right up to the window if we haven’t got the peanuts out. He’ll be squawking until finally one of us goes to put the peanuts out and then he’s fine. They’re very clever.”
The crow represents her father, she said, while another work features a hollyhock garden that represents her mother.
“They’re all connections that I’ve had in my life.”
