Goodvin track makes waves

It’s been a month since country singer/songwriter Aaron Goodvin learned Ole, one of the world’s largest music publishers, picked up one of his songs, and he’s still savouring what it all means.

“It was really cool,” says Goodvin who performed at the CCMA Songwriters’ Showcase held in Edmonton last month. The showcase also promoted a song-writing competition where about 25 artists each entered a song that was juried.

Goodvin submitted A Little Bit of Alright, a song he’d co-written with Nashville’s Daryl Burgess a few years ago. Burgess has honed his own chops writing Colin James' Just Came Back and penning tracks for Mark Chesnutt.

“It did well because it has a fun kind of groove. It’s positive and upbeat. It’s about being OK with the way things are,” says Goodvin.

To join the Ole songwriting stable (with notable copyrights from Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flats and Kelly Clarkson), he has signed over publishing rights except for a 25 percent writer’s share. But the St. Albert resident has no qualms about his contract.

“I’ve been networking in Canada for 13 years. I own my own stuff in Canada. But America is a lot bigger and there’s a lot of royalty money up for grabs. At Ole, they have song pluggers in Nashville and they are very good at what they do.”

In fact, on Friday, Oct. 15 Goodvin is flying down to Nashville for four months to tweak it and re-demo his song before Ole passes it to the pluggers. “I’m really excited about it being shown around Nashville.”

Potentially, the sky is the limit. Here in Canada five of Goodvin’s songs were recorded by artists: Duane Steele charted with Blessed; Jo Hikk recorded Smile Like That and I Hear Ya and Mike Gouchie took on Don’t Touch the Radio and Shattered Glass, the title track of his new album.

Goodvin’s last public performance before flying to Nashville is tonight at Ceili’s Irish Pub at 8 p.m. It is at 10338 – 109 St. No cover.
