The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) is opening its wallet to award a young composer a $1,000 bursary as part of the Young Composers Project.
Started in 1994 by then composer-in-residence John Estacio, it invites high school students passionate about composing to apply for the opportunity of mentorship.
The young composer will work with former composer-in-residence Alan Gilliland, head of composition at Grant MacEwan University, for about six months. During that time the student will create musical work for his/her instrument of study. Working with Gilliland the young composer will orchestrate it for the full symphony and the ESO will premiere the work during Symphony Under the Sky in September 2011.
“Alan has a lot of experience. He’s an expert in his area and is considered one of the finest composers in Canada,” says Melissa d’Natale, ESO education and community relations coordinator.
Students need to submit three sample compositions, a reference letter and reasons they deserve to become the ESO’s next young composer. Deadline for submissions is Monday, November 29.

Previous St. Albert winners of the bursary are Sean Doherty (2010) and Zosha DiCastri (2002).
