It’s tough to practice when band members live in two different provinces. However, Slowburn has no plans to call it quits.
Instead, the four-piece blues band is planning a second reunion concert at LB’s Pub on Friday, Nov. 15.
“When we were here on May 17, we had such a great show, we’re itching to play again. That Friday was a full house. It was a magical evening where we had family, friends and fans attend, and it was way beyond our expectations,” says bass player Phil Wilson-Birks.
Wilson-Birks, a 30-year former industrial arts teacher for the St. Albert Catholic school system, pulled up roots in 2009 and moved to Nelson, B. C. He was the band’s driving force and at the time, fans were worried Slowburn was dissolving.
They had an extensive reputation across the province as extraordinary musicians. In 2008, they played an exhausting 125 shows in addition to holding full-time jobs. At last count the band played close to 900 shows in its 11-year existence.
Slowburn has enjoyed several rosters of musicians. The grouping that gathers on Friday reunites Wilson-Birks with lead singer Bruce Watson, drummer Dare Trommler and lead guitar Patrick Hughes.
“This is version 2.0. We’re three old guys with the exception of Patrick.”
Although they don’t rehearse together any more, they keep the wheels greased and their chops up to par working on other projects.
For instance, Wilson-Birks is revving up the laid-back Nelson vibe playing in two bands: Sunshine Drive is cornucopia of rock music while the Baker Street Blues Trio gives soul a fresh take.
As Slowburn, the foursome shares a strong foundation and a library of songs.
“It seems like a comfortable shoe to slip into.”
And yes, they’ll be winging it at the concert. But Slowburn plans to make it an intimate evening for everyone.
“It’s an opportunity for friends and family to reconnect in a great night of music. People like what we play and we’re happy to play for them.”
