Cultivate committee asks for your art

If you’re an artist of any stripe looking to turn your work into a trophy, your search is over. The St. Albert Cultivates the Arts committee is asking members of the local creative community to submit their visual art.

If you’re an artist of any stripe looking to turn your work into a trophy, your search is over.

The St. Albert Cultivates the Arts committee is asking members of the local creative community to submit their visual art. One will be chosen as the artistic award at the 2011 Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Awards. While the ceremony takes place in the fall, the deadline for submissions is rapidly approaching with only seven days left.

That’s leaving organizers feeling the pressure, especially because of a noticeable lack of entries.

“We haven’t had any as of Friday. They tend to come in at the last minute,” said co-chair Nancy Watt.

Previous winners were prominent local potters Joanna Drummond and Julie Hage.

Watt explained that, while the call has gone out to visual artists, anyone from the city could enter.

“It’s a broad definition,” she laughed, denying that she was considering a submission herself. “I’m a performing artist.”

Started in 2009, the St. Albert Cultivate the Arts Festival is a community celebration of all of the arts in the city. Its purpose is to encourage people to discover, experience and celebrate the endeavours of local artists and performers. It was formally renamed StArts Fest last year.

This year’s Mayor’s Gala at the Arden Theatre will kick off the third annual festival to be held from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. The art will be used as the award/artwork that honours and acknowledges those individuals, organizations and businesses that have helped put St. Albert on the artistic map of Canada.

Each entry will be reviewed by an independent jury comprised of visual arts representatives and community leaders. The deadline is Friday, April 29. Each submission should have a maximum budget of $350 and can be made from any media including the following: sculpture, pottery, paper, fibre, painting, photography or mixed media.

The competition is open to all visual artists who reside in St. Albert. Each entry must be an original design with a maximum of two entries per person.
