Windy Chinook Festival blows in

There's a warm, toasty wind blowing into the region this winter and it's spelled Chinook Festival.

Targeted to creative souls, those searching for something new and different, the Chinook series brings together dynamic, daring and cutting edge artists.

Five performance streams are highlighted including theatre, dance, clowning and performance by art.

One performance stream, the multi-disciplinary Black Arts Matter (BAM) is dedicated to serving the region's Black artists through art, truth and community involvement.

Workshop West Playwrights' Theatre salutes Canoe 2018, a stream known from boundary breaking theatre that introduces an electric lineup from the hilarious to the horrific.

Azimuth Theatre's Expanse is a celebration of art in motion and the revelation of how body made art moves individuals.

The fourth stream adds a fun roster of Fringe-type shows, and the last stream, Sound Off, introduces deaf artists across the country to showcase their talent and stories.

The Chinook Festival runs from Feb. 8 to 18 at ATB Financial Arts Barn, 10330 - 84 St. Tickets are $25 through http://www.chinookseries.ca

Chinook also offers a Pay-What-You-Will program where 25 per cent of seats for each performance are allotted to patrons to pay what they are able.

The Lower Depths

The University of Alberta's Department of Drama presents a modern adaptation of The Lower Depths by famed Russian writer and five-time Nobel Prize nominee, Maxim Gorky.

Considered a template of Russian realism, the 1902 play depicts the lives of alcoholics, sex workers, thieves, and homeless men and women living together in a shelter.

In this update, director David Kennedy adds modern addictions, political movements and economic pressures of a post-digital revolution.

St. Albert actor Hayley Moorhouse, who earlier in the season commanded the stage in A Bright Room Called Day, returns for another affecting performance.

The Lower Depths runs Feb. 8 to 17 the Timms Centre for the Arts. Tickets are available at 780-492-2495 or emailing at [email protected].

Mardi Gras with Vinok

Vinok Worldance unmasks its wild side at its 8th annual Mardi Gras celebrations on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Chateau Louis Conference Centre.

Modelled on the spirit of New Orlean's raucous Mardi Gras, it fills the night with groovin' entertainment, southern Creole, Spanish and French cuisine as well as the styles of dance seen only on Bourbon Street.

Tickets are $85 inclusive, and $40 for children. Call 780-454-3739 or email [email protected].
