Country fans, hold on to your seats. After a 21-year absence, superstar Garth Brooks will return to Edmonton to play an arena show at Rogers Place on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017.

The stop is part of the three-year Garth Brooks World Tour. Performing with Brooks is the equally dynamic Trisha Yearwood, his partner and wife.

Collectively the couple has sold more than 175 million albums. Their duet, In Another’s Eyes, won a Grammy Award, so it’s not unreasonable they will sing it at the concert.

Tickets go on sale Friday, Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. sharp and will be sold only online through Ticketmaster or at 1-855-985-5000. There is a limit of eight tickets.

Non-VIP seats are $64.13 with additional charges totaling $79.98.

Speaking of Christmas presents, the Edmonton SchoolBoys Alumni Band performs Under the Baton on Sunday, Dec. 4 at St. Albert United Church as part of their 20th anniversary.

Musical director Taina Lorenz and the 50-member band team up with special guests Horns A Plenty, a horn choir with more than 20 musicians.

The program spans more than four centuries of Christmas repertoire from Bach’s Little Fugue and Mozart’s Sleigh Ride to the more contemporary White Christmas, Huron Carole and Adeste Fidelis.

Concert start time is 2:30 p.m. The United Church is at 20 Green Grove Drive. Admission is $10 at the door.

There’s a new wave of musicians on the local landscape and they’re bursting with raw energy and talent to boot.

MacEwan University’s music program is launching two concerts next week. The MacEwan Big Band, directed by Ray Baril and Jerrold Dubyk start things off on Monday, Dec. 5.

This incredible student band delivers a powerful fusion of Latin, funk and jazz styles loaded with colour and captivating saxophones, trombones and a rhythm section.

Nipping at its heels on Tuesday, Dec. 6 is the Showcase Band. St. Albert vocal director Chandelle Rimmer and Dr. William Richards lead this flashback to the ’70s and ’80s with the featured works from ABBA, Eurhythmics, Blondie, Peter Gabriel and more.

Tickets are $13.75 for adults and $11.75 for students/seniors. The concerts start at 7:30 p.m. at the John L. Haar Theatre, 10045 – 156 St.

’Tis the season for angels and mysterious beings from the heavens. This Christmas season Concordia Concert Choir and Jubellation combine their talents for an evening of traditional carols and sacred music.

Angels From Heaven Came recreates the awe of the Advent season from the anticipation of a Messiah through to his birth and the glory of an angel chorus.

The 45-voice concert choir is supported by handbells, piano and percussion.
