The first major collaboration between three prominent music groups takes place tonight at the University of Alberta.
The Alberta String Association, the Edmonton Classical Guitar Society and the University of Alberta combine their talents for Just Strings, a one-of-a-kind concert.
The plucked and bowed instruments range from guitar and violin to cello and double bass.
“Renee Perez, president of the guitar society, wanted to bring together the different string instruments and create more of a chamber music recital,” said violinist Lara Hyrak.
“We've had small collaborations throughout the year, but this is the big one.”
The former Bellerose High grad, now a second year music student at the university, performs Pablo de Sarasate's Malagueña accompanied by piano.
“It's an early expressionist piece. It shows different techniques, and it's fun to play and fun to listen to.”
She also plays Bach's Gigue from Partita No. 2, an unaccompanied violin solo that allows listeners to hear the pure sounds of the violin.
The bill includes guitarists David Grainger Brown, Alena Vyskocil, Ernst Birss and Perez with violinists Faustine Spillebout, Kyung Rok Moon and Hyrak. Mitchel Rees plays double bass and Isis Tse is on cello.
The free recital starts at 6 p.m. in Studio 2-7, the Fine Arts Bldg.
Before heading off on holidays, Pro Coro Chamber Choir closes their highly successful season with a new work from Paul Mealor titled Shadow of Dreams.
Mealor developed instant international fandom after composing Prince William and Kate Middleton's wedding music.
Shadow of Dreams is a new choral-cycle work based on Christina Rosetti's poems about the giving of oneself to sleep, dreams, death and lovers.
The concert takes place Sunday, May 29 at 2:30 p.m. in All Saints Cathedral. Tickets are available at the door.
