Yes We Mystic releases new album and tour info

Winnipeg’s indie rock band Yes We Mystic just released their debut full-length album Forgiver.

To celebrate its release the five rockers are heading out on an 11-day Western Canadian tour followed by a jump across the pond to share their music with European fans.

The Alberta leg of the tour includes Calgary’s renowned Sled Island Fest and Edmonton’s Mercury Room on Thursday, July 7.

The album’s lead single No Harm is inspired by “the strange private, violent lives of children when we’re not looking,” says Keegan Steele (vocals, mandolin, synth).

Podium combines old and new

For its final concert, the Podium Choral Festival performs Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor and Zachary Wadsworth’s acclaimed The Far West.

An all-Alberta cast sings Mozart’s Requiem, his final work and one of the most popular in his canon. Under the baton of Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff, the Richard Eaton Singers, i Coristi Chamber Choir and members of Luminous Voices join together with the 38-member Podium chamber orchestra.

Fronting the wall of sound are four Alberta soloists: Jolaine Kerley (soprano), Sara Staples (mezzo soprano), John Tessier (tenor) and Paul Grindlay (bass).

The Far West instead sets the poetry of Tim Dlugos, a young man who died of AIDS three years after an HIV diagnosis. He spent his last years studying to be a priest, volunteered as hospital chaplain and wrote poetry.

The concert is Sunday, May 22 at 3 p.m. at the Winspear Centre. Tickets are $34.50 at 780-420-1757 or tixonthesquare.ca.

Kill Your Television kills it

Nowadays it’s become popular to kidnap wealthy businessmen and demand a huge ransom.

In Kill Your Television’s latest production, The Conversion, two vigilantes abduct an affluent businessman and try to change his sexuality.

Their abusive methods are drastic and unorthodox, but they are intent on succeeding. As the conversion therapy advances, secrets come to light and a distressing history is exposed. It forces them to question just how far they will push the change.

Created by Nathan Cuckow and Kevin Sutley, it features Jason Chinn, Chris W. Cook and Cuckow.

The Conversion runs May 19 to 28 at the ATB Financial Arts Barns, 10330 – 84 Ave. Call 780-448-9000 for tickets.
