Folk Music Award submissions
Canadian folk music is alive and kicking. In fact, the 12th edition of the Folk Music Awards will be held on Dec. 2 to 3 in Toronto.
While the ceremonies seem far away, organizers have already opened nominations to Canadian artists and groups whose albums were released from June 15, 2015 up to June 14, 2016.
The awards currently boast 20 categories with five nominees for each category. Submissions are also open for the Unsung Hero Award, a legacy category that recognizes exceptional contributions of an individual, group or organization.
The early bird deadline for submissions is April 30. The final deadline is June 30. Details are available online at http://folkawards.ca/eligibility/.
Folk concert
It’s not every day that a folkie singer-songwriter makes it from open mics and busking at markets to working the national scene.
Joe Nolan, once a fixture at the St. Albert Farmer’s Market, has revitalized the regional folk music with his old soul lyrics and striking voice. Tornado, a 2014 album release, cemented his reputation as a rising star.
Come Thursday, April 14 Nolan puts on a folk-blues show with Lucette and Swear By the Moon at the Mercury Room.
Lucette is a 20-year old singer-songwriter-pianist from Edmonton whose specializes in country-folk and Swear By the Moon is duo motivated by spontaneous unpredictability and emotion.
Tickets are $8 at the door.
