Guitar trios headline Arden Theatre

The Montreal Guitar Trio and the California Guitar Trio once again meet up for concert of virtuosic music that is difficult to surpass.

Headlining a jazz-rock-classical program at the Arden Theatre on Friday, Feb. 12, the sextet performs music from legendary groups such as Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Rush as well as several compositions by each trio.

Audiences generally look forward to their performances as they continue to shatter stylistic expectations and forge new musical pathways.

HOJA back in St. Albert

Since 1998, the Saskatchewan based HOJA made headlines across the country as an energetic and beautifully harmonized a cappella band.

They have entertained tens of thousands with their unusual blend of a cappella comedy, doo-wop, rock, disco, country, pop and beat boxing.

HOJA will be part of the Arden Theatre’s Heritage Series with a one-hour concert on Thursday, Feb. 11 at St. Albert Community Hall at 17 Perron St. Showtime is 2 p.m.

Concrete Theatre mounts The Early Bloomer

Concrete Theatre, one of Edmonton’s foremost children and youth theatre companies presents playwright Jana O’Connor’s The Early Bloomer.

O’Connor, an award-winning playwright and guest comedian on CBC’s The Irrelevant Show, takes audiences to the fifth row of the Garden Plot Nursery School.

Maisy Daisy along with her best buds Casey and Lacey face the embarrassment and excitement of blossoming. But there are a few bad seeds in the school and problems arise.

“It’s basically about accepting people’s differences and celebrating diversity,” said St. Albert actor Jenny McKillop in the lead role as Maisy.

Directed by Mieko Ouchi, The Early Bloomer also stars Patricia Cerra, Troy O’Donnell and Mark Sinongco.

The Early Bloomer runs Friday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the ATB Financial Arts Barns. Saturday shows run at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tickets in advance or at the door. Call 780-448-9000.

Musical valentine

The vintage Capitol Theatre at Fort Edmonton Park stages a romantic musical valentine from Feb. 12 to 14.

Set in 1950 in small town Alberta, Song of the Martingale follows the love story between Ida and Roy. When a fight between the lovers leads to a life-changing moment, Roy is faced with the decision to leave Rocky Mountain House.

Thrust into an unlikely partnership with his father-in-law, Roy discovers that life is just like a game of cards – when you are down, you have to take risks to win.

Directed by Davina Steward, it stars Andrea House, Dana Andersen, Paul Morgan Donald, Rob Rasko, Francie Goodwin-Davies and Etta House.

The five-piece band features top notch musicians Marc Ladouceur, Erik Mortimer, Bob Blair, Chris Smith and Chris Bzerzicki playing hits such as Georgia On My Mind and Only You.

Morinville’s Snowman Festival

The Town of Morinville and partner groups have planned a series of recreational activities for the Snowman Festival and Family Day Weekend on Feb. 13 to 15.
