Diwali is a cultural and social event with a deep spiritual significance that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.

This year Northlands Park hosts both free and ticketed events that aim to educate and entertain. The celebrations take place Friday, Nov. 6 and Saturday, Nov. 7 at the racetrack and casino complex.

Bollywood Dance Night kicks off the fun on Friday night at 9 p.m. followed by an evening gala on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. Both are ticketed events.

Saturday boasts a huge free afternoon celebration from 1 to 5 p.m. that encompasses authentic food, artistic displays and dances. The Bollywood Beats, a dance fitness studio, also drops in for a series of workshops.

Vendors will be on hand selling handicrafts and clothing including saris. For those new to an East Indian wardrobe, a sari-tying workshop is offered.

The MusĂ©e Morinville Museum pays tribute to local service men and women during Veterans’ Week from Nov. 5 to 12.

The museum will exhibit displays including military photographs, posters and artifacts. There is an additional new display of Canadian flags, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Maple Leaf.

Located at 10010 – 101 St. next to St. Jean Baptiste Church, the museum is usually open from Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. On Remembrance Day hours are shortened from 12 noon to 3 p.m. For more information call 780-572-5585.
