Arden Theatre presents DakhaBrakha

DakhaBrakha is unlike any group that has performed at St. Albert’s Arden Theatre. Armed with the ability to mesmerize audiences across the world, the hot Ukrainian folk-punk quartet appears with its sky-high lambs-wool hats and other-worldly avant-garde sound.

They craft stunning new sonic worlds from traditional songs, reinventing their heritage with a zealous ear to contemporary resonances.

Determined to create something radically different, the foursome experimented with traditional folk music adding rhythms and instruments from India, Africa, Russia and the Arab speaking world. Their powerful, international world sound is dubbed “ethno-chaos.”

In the old Ukrainian language DakhaBrakha means “give/take,” a concept they take to heart in inspiring Ukraine’s younger generation as well as the rest of the world.

DakhaBrakha performs on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 plus facility fee. Call 780-459-1542 or online through Ticketmaster.

Travellin’ down country’s memory lane

The Capitol Theatre at Fort Edmonton Park sets the stage for The Little Ole Opry featuring the lovely Lisa Hewitt and her band The Trads.

Hewitt warps back in time resurrecting vintage hits from the legends such as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette.

Dressed in rhinestone-studded attire and set against a backdrop resembling Nashville’s ol’ Ryman Auditorium, Hewitt and The Trads resurrect a classic country show.

The show is on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $22 advance, $25 at the door. For tickets visit fortedmontonpark.ca.
