Half a dozen of St. Albert’s future country stars competed at Big Valley Jamboree’s 2015 ATB Homegrown Talent Stage.
Andrea Shipka, 16, and Hailey Benedict, 13, last year’s winner of the junior competition reached the Top 10.
“Even though they didn’t come in the top three, I was very happy with the results,” said Irma MacPherson, organizer for the Homegrown Talent Stage.
She explains that 240 young talents initially submitted a video of their songs. The top 83 were selected to attend live auditions. The numbers were further whittled down to the 51 competing at Big Valley.
“Andrea was awesome. She has a different tone to her voice and I think she’s going to do really well.”
“And as for Hailey, she was the youngest in the youth category. She had a bit of technical difficulty, but she sailed through it.”
Grand prizewinner Kaleigh Jo Kirk of Cochrane receives a full production recording session valued at $3,500 with Hands Up Music. Tupelo Honey’s Dan Davidson and his partner Ari Mastoras own and operate the recording studio.
Tonight thousands of music lovers will sway to the music of the annual Cariwest Saturday Night Fete held at the Shaw Conference Centre.
Cariwest is one of the largest Caribbean festivals in Canada, second only to the Toronto Caribbean Carnival.
And the Saturday Night Fete is the jewel in the crown complemented with feathery, blingy costumes and amazing savoury dishes.
The dance’s headliner is award-winning SOCA superstar Kerwin Du Bois, the heart and soul of SOCA in Trinidad and Tobago. Other entertainers on deck beside Du Bois are DJ Soca Sweetness, Jeff Jam and Drew Atlas.
Doors open at 9 p.m. For tickets to the Trinidad carnival visit tixonthesquare.ca and for more information log online at etrevents.com.
If you’re looking to unwind with a foamy brew and an untamed party hog, drop by O’Maillie’s Irish Pub tonight.
Yes, Mike, The Party Hog returns. Promoting his act on Facebook, he wears a flat, big-nostrilled pig’s nose and matching floppy ears. The Party Hog’s porker humour reads something like this:
“Just had an early dinner with Taylor Swift. She had Meat Loaf. Then she had dinner…” or “Opening for Taylor Swift tonight at Rexall. Parking lot, east side, in handcuffs.”
So for some not-so-swift jokes and a lineup of songs that run from Kid Rock, Ram Jam and Styx to Amy Winehouse, Bryan Adams and Sheryl Crow stop by O’Maille’s to see one man, one guitar.
Show starts at 8 p.m. Some blue humour. No cover.
