Although Chilliwack and Loverboy, two bands with their heyday in the 1980s haven’t put out original music in more than five years, they are embedded in the Canadian psyche as the go-to bands for retro celebrations.

And they are the perfect party bands for Rock’n August, St. Albert’s time warp into the ’50s. Loverboy and Chilliwack are the featured headliners at this unique diabetes fundraiser that takes place on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Servus Credit Union Place.

Tickets are $50 to $65 and are available at ticketmaster.ca.

It could only happen in improv. After four years of bustin’ their chops in front of Edmonton audiences, Go 4 Broke, an improv troupe largely made up of people from St. Albert, is finally hosting their first show in the city.

“We’re putting on The Fringe Improv Pre-Show. The first half is going to be our standard games and we’ve been experimenting with new formats for the second half – short form improv games,” said founding member Josh Languedoc.

Originally cast as BeerProv more than four years ago, the newbie troupe rebranded itself as Go 4 Broke in 2013. Since then, each show has been a test case for what appeals to regional audiences.

“This St. Albert show is to test the waters and see how it’s received. We’d like to try and start a once-a-month improv show and see if it catches on.”

The debut St. Albert show takes place at NEXT Community Christian Church on Saturday, July 11 at 8 p.m. The church is located at #490, 140 St. Albert Trail where the old Village Tree Theatre used to be.

Admission is $10 cash at the door. All ages welcome.
