St. Albert’s Arden Theatre is a niche stop for Beatles tribute artists. However, Saturday, June 27, is the first time the road show theatre is hosting one direct from Argentina.
That’s right. Latino-style Beatlemania is about to invade the city.
Now & Then was born out of the passion and talent of four young Beatle fans that won a battle of the bands in the 2014 Latin America Beatle Week. Not only is their rock ’n’ roll rumoured to sound like the Fab Four. They bear a certain similarity to the mop top’s early suit-and-tie image.
Edgardo Rodrigues Baez as Paul McCartney (bass guitar), Nicolas Mansilla as John Lennon (rhythm guitar), Pablo Gutierrez as George Harrison (lead guitar) and Nicolas Spadaccini as Ringo Starr go head-to-head with the famous Liverpudlians.
The show is divided into three parts starting with the tail end of the Beatles’ career. First off is a repeat of their final public performance, an impromptu concert from the rooftop of Apple Headquarters on Jan. 30, 1969.
The concert follows with their experimental period that thrived with records such as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and closes with the early years.
Tickets are $45 per seat. Visit ticketmaster.ca.
If you missed Edmonton International Jazz Festival headliner Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton on Monday, do not panic. The Bad Plus Joshua Redman makes an appearance this Friday at the Winspear Centre.
The Bad Plus always seemed destined as a powerhouse trio, but when they hooked up with collaborator-saxophonist Joshua Redman they began to push the boundaries of jazz beyond imagination.
Redman’s melodic prowess blends seamlessly with the avant-garde populism of Reid Anderson, Ethan Iverson and David King. Opening for them is Kneeboy, a group with explosive rock energy that balances tight compositions with no-holds-barred improvising.
Other highlights at the Yardbird Suite series: Emil Vicklicky’s “Grand Moravia” Trio, the Roddy Elias Trio, Ranee Lee Quintet with Strings, and Kenny Werner Trio.
The Cabaret Series at Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre continues with Gogo Penguin, Bria Skonberg, Banda Magda and Obara International.
Also at OSPAC is the Late Night Spotlight Series with High Definition Quartet and the Jim Head Quartet.
And the Club Series is split between Café Blackbird and Blue Chair Café. Blackbird hosts the Cheryl Fisher Quintet, Erica Dawn Quartet and Mo Lefevre. Over at Blue Chair, Prequal and Mallory Chipman duke it out for the most fans.
