This year SkirtsAfire herArts Festival gets cracking with The Mommy Monologues as a precursor to the actual festival opening March 9.
This mainstage production, a narrative weaving 10 stories about motherhood, begins a 10-day run prior to the festival from March 2 to 12 at the Cabaret Theatre.
Unlike The Vagina Monologues performed by members of the community telling their own real life stories, The Mommy Monologues showcases three of the capital region's hardest working professional actors: Coralie Cairns, Mary Hulbert and Chantelle Han.
Directed by Glenda Stirling, The Mommy Monologues are about 10 women, with 10 stories and all the kids, husbands, partners, grandparents and life-changing events in a woman's life.
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. The Cabaret Theatre is at Alberta Avenue Community League, 9210 118 Ave. Tickets are $17 to $22 and are available at 780-427-1757 or at tixonthesquare.ca.
Mascall Dance, one of Vancouver's most innovative contemporary dance companies, performs The Outliner on March 3 and 4 at the Timms Centre for the Arts.
Mounted in a white kingdom populated by fantastical beings and unexpected events, each dancer wears an architecturally designed costume.
Some of the costumed dancers appear as creatures, others as contraptions. All are extensions of the body jockeying to find an ignition point.
Choreographed by Jennifer Mascall with an original score by Stefan Smulovitz and a costume design by Elliot Neck, the dance creates a spatial understanding of our bodies.
The Outliner starts at 8 p.m. The Timms is at 8703 – 112 St. Tickets are $25 to $35. Call 780-427-1757.
In honour of Ash Wednesday, i Coristi Chamber Choir sings Dust to Dust on Saturday, March 4 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
Conductor Dr. Rob Curtis celebrates the choir's 23rd season taking a moment to reflect on the Lenten season with John Rutter's much-loved Requiem, an anthem observing creation and death.
In addition, the choir sings the world premiere of Christine Donkin's A Better Time Shall Come.
Holy Trinity is at 10037 – 84 Ave. Tickets range from $13 to $20. Call 780-420-1757 or at tixonthesquare.ca.
