Once again St. Albert actor Maureen Rooney dons the robes of the most famed Grey Nun of all in a touring show titled Interview History with St. Marguerite d’Youville.

Rooney gives a 35-minute performance followed by a question and answer session at Star of the North May 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The first Canadian-born saint, d’Youville struggled as a single parent following the death of her whiskey-trading husband.

Necessity required her to develop a keen eye for business and she was so successful, she used her skills to help the sick and underprivileged. One step led to another and she eventually founded the Grey Nuns.

The Photo starts 15 minutes after a life-changing moment in a couple’s lives. Having a baby was supposed to be their greatest joy. But when it is stillborn, time becomes suspended and nothing makes sense.

Each chooses a different lifeline to keep from drowning. Gina (Elena Porter) clutches a camera. Mark (Michael Peng) grabs on to anything within his grasp.

Twelve years in the making The Photo is a play with multiple rewrites. Playwright Dana Rayment has seen the play through numerous versions. Now under the direction of Sterling Award nominee Michelle Kennedy, The Photo runs until May 23 at C103 (formerly Catalyst Theatre), 8529 – 103 St.

Tickets range from $20 adults, $15 students/seniors/artist and matinees are pay-what-you-can. Tickets are on sale at 780-420-1757 or online at tixonthesquare.ca.

Every year in May, Walterdale Theatre sets time aside for its Cradle to Stage productions. It is an opportunity for unpublished playwrights to have their works presented.

This year, Walterdale judges have chosen two plays. The main production is Jesus Master Builder: A Divine Comedy by Mark Greene paired with a smaller reading of Mary-Ellen Perley’s Magpies.

In various construction stages since 2007, Jesus Master Builder is a tongue-in-cheek, irreverent comedy that follows Jesus of Nazareth as he struggles to make both dads happy.

Joseph wants Jesus to go into the family business. God has other plans. The big question becomes, “Can Jesus complete the new housing development that Joseph has won a contract for and make his other dad proud?” It is a cross only one man can bear.

Cradle to Stage runs May 18 to 23. Walterdale Theatre is at 10322 – 83 Ave. Tickets are $12 to $18 and are available at 780-420-1757 or online at tixonthesquare.ca
