Go big or go home. That appears to be the adage Toy Guns Theatre is following as it puts out a casting call for 10 lead dancers and an additional 50-plus dancers to create a massive extravaganza.

Shay Kuebler, formerly of Sherwood Park, returns to Edmonton following a national tour to choreograph a collective work.

He plans to create a showpiece that will be inaugurated at Dancing in the Park on July 15 at Dancing at the Legislative Grounds.

“The dance will speak to how something can develop as it transfers from person to person,” said Toy Guns Theatre artistic director Jake Hastey.

Now living in Vancouver, Keubler founded the Shay Kuebler Radical System Arts Society that creates performance works through a mixed language of martial arts, theatre and dance.

“His powerful moves go from sustained to very fast. He presents challenging and moving work,” notes Hastey.

Kuebler’s own dance background bridges hip hop, contemporary, tap and jazz and he encourages dancers from assorted disciplines to apply.

“At the moment we have everything from African to ballet to Ukrainian. We’re very happy we’re getting such a good response and we’re going to try to make dancers accessible to other dancers.”
