Artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre just announced the ballet company’s 2017-2018 season. The lineup includes a new family ballet and three internationally acclaimed guest companies.
Most anticipated would be the exciting world premiere of a contemporary ballet inspired by the music of The Tragically Hip.
The Tragically Hip is part of a series of portrait ballets that have paid tribute to the music of Elton John, k.d. lang, Sarah McLachlan and Joni Mitchell.
The Hip was presented with a proposal last fall and they are enthused about a collaboration that will advance their songwriting and music.
A message from the Hip stated, “We are thrilled to be part of this series of wonderful ballet portraits set to the music of some of the greatest musicians of our time. We are excited to see how our music will be interpreted through the vision of a renowned dance company.”
The season also introduces Cinderella, the first new family ballet in 10 years. For more information call 780-428-4549 or visit albertaballet.com.
Mark O’Rowe’s Terminus is billed as an Irish ‘metaphysical odyssey, a hard-hitting urban tale that combines elements of fantasy, gothic horror, cartoon violence, poetic verse and human pathos.
Written in vivid verse, the play is made up of three nameless characters interweaving three profanity-laced monologues. It follows an Irish schoolteacher who volunteers at a suicide hotline.
After a call from a former student, she tracks down the girl to Dublin’s seedy underworld where lesbian gangs perform illegal abortions with sharpened broomsticks.
Directed by Jim Guedo, the play stars Morgan Donald, Ben Stevens and Christine MacInnis.
Terminus runs April 13 to 16 and 18 to 23 at ATB Financial Arts Barns. Tickets are $15 to $25.
