The spirited, romantic and much loved musical story of Maria and the von Trapp family returns as Cantilon Choirs presents The Sound of Music: The Musical Concert.
Directed by Heather Johnston, Cantilon Choirs present the abridged concert version on March 10 and 11 at the Timms Centre.
Although the musical celebrates its 52nd anniversary this year, it still tugs at the heart with an incredible Rogers and Hammerstein score that includes Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and Edelweiss.
Of special interest are two St. Albert vocalists taking turns in the role of Maria. Both are dedicated members of Cantilon’s award-winning Belle Canto Choir.
The two Marias are Lauren Chalaturnyk, a law student at the University of Alberta, and Amy Bautista, an award-winning Grade 1 teacher who also conducts Cantilon’s St. Albert KinderSingers program.
Chalaturnyk performs Friday at 11 a.m. and Bautista takes the second show at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Bautista sings at 2 p.m. while Chalaturnyk enjoys the lead at the 7 p.m. concert.
Tickets are still available for select performances. For ticketing information visit cantilonchoirs.ca.
Director Michael Peng mounts the satirical comedy musical Urinetown opening Friday, March 10 for a two-weekend performance at Concordia University.
The two-act musical, with music by Mark Hollmann and lyrics by Hollman and Greg Kotis, satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social responsibility, bureaucracy, big corporations and city politics.
Urinetown opens after a massive drought and water shortage makes private toilets impossible. All rest room activities are done in public toilets controlled by a despotic megacorporation that controls all water consumption.
There are tyrannical laws controlling urination and anyone who breaks them is sent to Urinetown in perpetuity where no one ever returns. Tensions are high and an unjust incident sparks a rebellion.
Unrinetown features a 16-person cast of Concordia student performers including St. Albert’s Andrea McHenry.
The musical runs March 10 to 12 and March 17 to 19. Tickets are $15 to $20. Call 780-420-1757 or online at tixonthesquare.ca.
If you’re looking to beat the winter blues with a warm-hearted musical comedy, check out Crazy For You opening Thursday at the Citadel Theatre.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, this romantic musical comedy follows Bobby Child, a New York banker with a craving for show business. When his mother sends him to foreclose on a small mining town theatre, he falls in love with Polly, a local girl.
Foreclosure means losing Polly, so he decides to put on a play to pay the mortgage of the failing theatre. Although the production is a bust, it lays the foundation for a new career and true love.
The score, composed by legendary composers George and Ira Gershwin for the 1930 Girl Crazy includes classics such as I Got Rhythm, Embraceable You, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Someone to Watch Over Me.
The all-star Edmonton cast of Andrew MacDonald-Smith, Jesse Gervais, Susan Gilmour and John Ullyatt also features St. Albert Children’s Theatre music director Rachel Bowron as Irene Roth, a wealthy woman Bobby has been engaged to for two years.
Crazy for You runs until March 26. Tickets are available at 780-425-1820 or at citadeltheatre.com.
