Get ready to experience a new and exciting songwriting contest that is totally unlike any other.

Get ready to experience a new and exciting songwriting contest that is totally unlike any other.

The Celebrate Canada 150 committee features a songwriting competition that will net some lucky winner a $5,000 recording package from PlanIt Sound and a $1,000 cash prize from The Survey Company.

The winning singer-songwriter will also enjoy a chance to perform his/her original song at all of St. Albert’s Canada 150 events including Canada Day and a citywide block party on Sept. 8.

This is a golden chance for both aspiring singer-songwriters to receive validation and for established artists to obtain additional recognition.

All singer-songwriters need to do is tell a story about their community.

“Canada 150 means different things to different people. To us it’s more than a birthday. It’s a moment to reflect on what being Canadian means to you,” said Canada 150 co-ordinator Rhonda Egar-Lee.

The contest is open to St. Albert residents of any age. Singers of all genres, rappers and spoken word artists are encouraged to submit a song by uploading a YouTube video.

“We have such a diverse spectrum of artists living in St. Albert and hopefully we have a few hidden gems,” Egar-Lee noted.

Five finalists will be chosen and will have an opportunity to perform their song live at the International Children’s Festival Outdoor Stage on Saturday, June 3. A panel of judges that includes CTV weatherman Josh Classen will select the winner.

“The public will have some sway. Their response will help encourage the judges.”

Entry forms will be accepted from March 1 until May 11 at 5 p.m. Complete details are available at stalbert.ca/canada150.

“I hope songwriters reflect on the significance of Canada 150 and highlight St. Albert in a thoughtful way and tell the story of our sesquicentennial.”
