Mission Hill Brass Band is hosting its final concert of the season Gatsby style – with elegance and panache.
Raring to go with a night of bubbly Pops, the band regroups at its traditional haunt, the St. Albert United Church on Friday, May 24.
Under the direction of Daniel Skepple Jr., the full brass complement spreads its wings with grand movie and Broadway scores ranging from Phantom of the Opera and The Great Escape to Braveheart and Bolero.
“It’s light and popsy. Nothing too heavy. In fact, some of the pieces were picked by sections of the band,” said Skepple.
He is also featuring special guest soloist, euphonium player Chris Diaper. A chemist at the University of Alberta by day, he is the principal soloist for the Mill Creek Colliery Band. He will play four pieces, two with his wife Karen, an accomplished pianist.
“Chris is a world-class euphonium player. He’s spectacular and he has a unique sense of humour,” Skepple said.
This year the band outstripped all previous years in terms of community participation and audience attendance, he added.
“We want to reward the loyalty of our patrons. We want to keep it light. Plus it’s going to be a fun concert and we want people to enjoy themselves.”
The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. St. Albert United Church is at 29 Green Grove Dr. Tickets are $15 adults, youth $10 and kids under 10 are free.
