The 12th annual Country Music Alberta Awards nominee announcements came out Feb. 7, and there’s an interesting mix of veterans and emerging talents poised to make it big.
In our neck of the woods, pop-country artist Hailey Benedict leads the pack with four nominations. The most prestigious category is Songwriter of the Year for Level Up, a song urging people to assist youth in need of mental health support.
Benedict also received a nod for Interactive Artist of the Year, Community Spirit and Video of the Year for the fast rising Wanted You To, a song about a woman who has moved on from her boyfriend.
Other locally connected nominees are St. Albert resident Dan Davidson as well as former St. Albert residents Aaron Goodvin and Brett Kissel in contention for Male Artist of the Year. Goovdin's song You Ain't is also nominated for Single of Year. Lastly, true-grit country band, The Dungarees, is tapped for Horizon Group of the Year as well as Horizon Single of the Year for Rain.
The country awards weekend takes place April 1 to 2 at the Grey Eagle Resort & Event Centre in Calgary. Tickets start at $140. Visit www.countrymusicalberta.com for information and ticket availability.
