The party “where art collectors can discover artists when they are fresh/new ... and affordable” is returning to Edmonton this week.
The second Art Loft event is being put on by MINBID, an online art auction organization. Jamie Law said that MINBID has actually put on 10 art shows this year alone, including this one. The regular shows are free to attend while this is a bit loftier than the others.
“Our first Art Loft event was titled MINBID VIP,” he elaborated, adding that contributing artists are only allowed to submit one or two pieces, instead of five or six for the regular events.
“Fewer pieces, higher prices … and more exclusivity. You get the first glimpse of these paintings. It’s their first time in the limelight, and probably the rock-bottom prices that you’re going to get them at.”
There are two ticket prices, both are all inclusive. The basic ticket is $40 with the more expensive $60 ticket called the Cognac Experience.
“If you’re coming, you’re coming to take part in a really cool event. They’re good parties too. It’s not just a fancy schmancy art show. This is going to be a rad show!”
Some of the submissions come from street artists and graffiti artists. Law himself has contributed a piece that was inspired by his 2012 exhibit at Edmonton’s Paint Spot. Police raided the show and seized his work, as part of their investigation into his graffiti.
“I have taken all of my documentation from the art gallery raid and all the charges and the warrants ... newspaper clippings. I’ve made a giant collage that I’m putting resin coats on and spray paint. It’s literally very official documentation made into art!”
MINBID supports up and coming local artists and “explores the underbelly of the Canadian arts scene.”
Art Loft – Episode 2 takes place on Friday from 8 to 11 p.m. It takes place at the Ellis Building Lofts located at 10123 112 St. in Edmonton. People can get their tickets online at www.minbidauctions.com.
