Art lovers in the city have their pick of special events to attend this weekend. For starters, the Visual Arts Studio Association is hosting a one-night-only Halloween party on Friday evening. For $20, people can dress up (or not) and get in on the action with games, an art auction, a silent auction, and door prizes, along with other fun activities. The Mystical, Magical, Fantasy Party is a fundraiser for VASA’s Authentic Art program for people with developmental disabilities. For five years, the program has taken students on their artistic journeys through learning about different media and colour, building a sense of community amongst the classes along the way. They show off their incredible talents in biannual exhibits in the gallery space as part of Alberta Culture Days. The fall session of Authentic Art started just last week. The party runs on Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased via Eventbrite. VASA is located in the Hemingway Centre at 25 Sir Winston Churchill Ave. Call 780-460-5990 or visit www.vasa-art.com for more.

Guild takes the place … St. Albert Place

If you want more than that, then just skip over a block or two. St. Albert Place is the place for a weekend art show and sale that people wait half a year for. The St. Albert Painters' Guild has its three-day fall event set to start up the same night. Where else would you be able to fit in hundreds of brand new paintings by more than 40 local visual artists all in one place? It’s a colossal effort and the guild puts an army of people behind making it a success. “There’s a phenomenal amount of volunteer hours that go into not only running the show but running the guild itself. It’s a chance for us to step up and step out,” said event lead Valerie Smith, noting that everyone is excited to finally bring the eager crowds in. “Our paintings are ready. Now we want to boldly put them on display. We hope people find pleasure in viewing them and we hope that there’s some people that will find pleasure in buying them. We love to see them on somebody else’s walls.” A Harvest of Art opens on Fri., Oct. 27 at 9 a.m., continuing throughout the day with an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Many artists will be in attendance. There will also be musical accompaniment by Edmonton-based jazz and blues duo Bleached Rag. The event continues on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and then concludes on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit www.paintersguild.ca for more info.
