Every year in March the United Nations celebrates International Women’s Day in a bid to promote full equality between the sexes.

For the past 15 years, the St. Albert Baha’i have recognized the contribution women make for a better society by hosting the International Women’s Day awards. This year the celebration will take place on March 5.

They are asking St. Albert and Sturgeon County residents to honour the special women in their lives by submitting their names. Nomination deadline is Monday, Feb. 7.

“The qualities we look for are steadfastness, courage, perseverance, service, love and passion,” says committee member Elaine Tahririha. “But you know what’s interesting about our past nominees is that when they start talking about what they do, their face lights up. It’s like an inner flame, an inner passion, an inner calling.”

There are eight categories this year: health, education, multicultural, Aboriginal initiatives, unsung heroine, science, arts and youth empowerment. There’s even a ninth category for anyone that made unusual contributions.

School trustee Jacquie Hansen, RCMP officer Jane Spans, composer Sandra Brenneis, community service promoter Glynis Thomas, youth advocate Gillian Hansen and of course Lois Hole are only some of the women that have been singled out for their unflagging service.

“They’re all so humble, especially when it comes to talking about themselves. And some are in the background making it possible for others to shine,” says Tahririha referring to the late Millie Seitz who served on numerous committees throughout her life.

This year the United Nations’ theme focuses on education, training and better access to science and technology. “In St. Albert we are so blessed to have the opportunity for education, for development whether it’s mental or spiritual. But it’s not like that around the world. And this will help call attention to the situation of women all over the world who suffer from systemic poverty, denial of education and AIDS.”

Nomination forms can be picked up at the library and at Family Herbal Clinic, #120, 5 Giroux Rd. Forms are also available online at www.stalbertbahai.org, or you can email [email protected].
