What does arts and culture mean to you? It’s a question that has as many answers as individuals.
With Canada celebrating its 150th anniversary, organizations passionate about how arts and culture defines their communities are gearing up for a fresh round of celebrations on Alberta Culture Days from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.
“As 2017 is the 10th anniversary of Alberta Culture Days and the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, this is a wonderful opportunity for Alberta’s communities to be connected to a national celebration,” stated Ricardo Miranda, Minster of Culture and Tourism.
Grants are open to cultural organizations, non-profit groups, libraries, venues and facilities, schools and community groups eager to promote a one, two or three-day event.
There are three matching levels of funding available to non-profit community organizations. The feature celebration site can receive up to $10,000. A host celebration site is eligible to collect up to $5,000 and a one-day pop-up can obtain up to $1,000.
“Alberta Culture and Tourism is making $200,000 in funding available to assist with the planning and co-ordinating of Culture Days events in communities across the province. This is consistent with the funding provided last year. While not a requirement for funding, Canada’s 150th anniversary provides an opportunity for communities to connect their Culture Days activities to the national celebration,” wrote John Archer, acting press secretary, culture and tourism, in an email to the Gazette.
He added, “Applications are evaluated on established criteria including: providing free, family-friendly events; showcasing/involving Alberta art, artists and/or heritage; involving youth; and partnering with other organizations in the community.”
Community organizations can apply for grant funding by logging on to the Alberta Culture Days website at www.albertaculturedays.ca. Applications will be accepted until June 16, 2017.
