The St. Albert Public School's Night of Music graces the Winspear Centre with its variety and performance calibre this Tuesday evening.

This inaugural event, after a period of inactivity for nearly eight years, returns as a highly anticipated affair.

It brings together close to 450 district band and choir students from eight elementary schools, three junior high schools as well as Paul Kane High and Bellerose Composite High.

“We want to showcase St. Albert's public school music students, their talent and where they are going,” said Brian Demuynck, committee organizer and Lorne Akins music teacher.

In past years Night of Music also featured special guest notables such as St. Albert Community Band. In this remount, the Royal Artillery Band complete with a solo vocalist and two pipers perform three charts and join in the finale. One of their selections is the illustrious Mars from Holst's The Planets.

The push for Night of Music came after newly appointed district superintendant Barry Wowk encouraged its return.

“We used to do it at the St. Albert Alliance Church, but we've had difficulty finding a venue that was big enough. It's not only difficult, but the waiting lists are long,” Demuynck said.

Student selections range from Michael Jackson's Thriller to Disney's Frozen to How to Train Your Dragon. While the songs may be familiar, students will aim to hit all the right notes with pride and vigour.

In addition, a jazz band will perform in the lobby prior to the concert.

“It's not only a chance to showcase beautiful music and our career goals for students, but also to encourage our Grade 5 and 6 students to enjoy music and continue it through school.”

The concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available for St. Albert Public School district office at 780-460-3712.
