Make a difference and promote art in St. Albert's public places

City of St. Albert's art selection committee is searching for new members to identify future priorities

Art is what makes a city distinct and reveals the secret of its soul. If you believe public art is important and you want to make a difference promoting it, the City of St. Albert is offering you a chance to identify priorities and have your say.

The city’s Art in Public Places Program is searching for artists, engineers, designers, business owners, and community members to serve on a selection committee. The selection committee will evaluate applications for new public art projects within city limits.

Committee members will be chosen on a project-by-project basis. Their role is to consider the proposed artwork and how it fits into a community’s artistic and cultural character.

Anyone 18 and older is eligible to submit their name, however priority will be given to the following:

• Residents and business owners of St. Albert

• Artistic industry professionals – people with direct knowledge and expertise in all areas of public art. This includes concept development, engineering requirements, fabrication, materials and conservation. Input from architects, engineers, design professionals, museum or gallery professionals, art educators and historians are particularly valuable.

• Artistic peers – local artists living in St. Albert or neighbouring communities with professional skills, knowledge and experience relevant to public art creation and delivery.

• Community members – people who live and work in the city and value the arts and have a basic understanding of artistic practices

Through the years, the City of St. Albert developed a hefty collection of murals, sculptures, paintings, bas-reliefs, pottery, metal works and benches. Artists have used materials ranging from paint, tiles, clay, concrete and wood to polyester resin, steel, bronze, granite and recycled materials.

Anyone interested in continuing to build the legacy or learn more about the project can visit stalbert.ca and search for “Selection Committee Application.”
